Organizers since 1999
The ‘Barciaecus’ Gold Panning Association of Navelgas is in charge of organizing the Regional and National Goldpanning Championships every year.
These championships will bring you into direct contact with nature, while allowing you to enjoy the rich landscape, sports, culture and culinary delights that the area has to offer.
The gold hidden in the area's rivers can be considered one of the most important local resources, and can be exploited for tourism to take advantage of the “gold fever” existing all over the world.
Gold panning has a long tradition in western Asturias, since the astures, some of the first inhabitants of this area, already used it as their only way of extracting the metal from the rivers.
How many years has Navelgas hosted the championships?
Today, it has become a fun sport that attracts locals and foreigners alike.
Navelgas is the national benchmark for this now recreational sport, which was born more than half a century ago in Finland.
Gold panning is today practised in many countries. By organizing goldpanning championships, Navelgas has become known nationally and internationally, with people from many parts of the world participating in them.
It is important to mention that Navelgas hosted the European Goldpanning Championship in 2005, and in 2008 and 2015 it hosted the World Championships, where more than 500 panners from 21 different countries took part and had the opportunity to get to know Asturias.
We look forward to hosting the World Goldpanning Championship again in 2025. This will be held in Navelgas in August.
Each year, the Association presents its:
Gold Pan Award
The Gold Pan is awarded to individuals or entities that stand out for supporting this sport and defending nature in general, with its rich plant and animal resources as the source of life on our planet.
The award is presented each year during the opening ceremony.
